BOOK REVIEW: Reminders of Him by Colleen Hoover

Reminders of Him has the classic CoHo writing style — smooth, addictive, and would make you forget that you’re reading a book.

 SUMMARY:

A troubled young mother yearns for a shot at redemption in this heartbreaking yet hopeful story from #1 New York Times bestselling author Colleen Hoover.

After serving five years in prison for a tragic mistake, Kenna Rowan returns to the town where it all went wrong, hoping to reunite with her four-year-old daughter. But the bridges Kenna burned are proving impossible to rebuild. Everyone in her daughter’s life is determined to shut Kenna out, no matter how hard she works to prove herself.

The only person who hasn’t closed the door on her completely is Ledger Ward, a local bar owner and one of the few remaining links to Kenna’s daughter. But if anyone were to discover how Ledger is slowly becoming an important part of Kenna’s life, both would risk losing the trust of everyone important to them.

The two form a connection despite the pressure surrounding them, but as their romance grows, so does the risk. Kenna must find a way to absolve the mistakes of her past in order to build a future out of hope and healing.

THOUGHTS:

I wanna start by saying that this book is depressing af. I’m not a mother but the things that Kenna had gone through as one are hard to read and would surely bring tears to your eyes and would even make you angry at times.

Reminders of Him has the classic CoHo writing style — smooth, addictive, and would make you forget that you’re reading a book. Especially with a first person POV and with some letters written, it feels like reading a diary.

In my opinion, the two main characters are easier to like as individuals than as a couple. I don’t like how they got together given the circumstances. But Kenna is an amazing mother character and Ledger is totally like my dream book boyfriend. They are both easy to like as persons because they both have really good hearts and it’s clearly shown through their alternating POV.

I only have two things that I didn’t like about this book. The first is like I said earlier, the relationship between the two main characters. I can’t explain further because I wanna keep this review spoiler-free. The second thing I didn’t like is that halfway through the book, I somehow got bored with it and that’s when I also started to get disappointed with Hoover’s choice of focusing more on Kenna and Ledger’s relationship. I could’ve liked it better if we got to see more of Kenna’s life as a single mother fighting to get to know her daughter.

Overall, I think this book is still worth reading especially if you’re looking for a book to give you a rollercoaster of emotions.
